Rep. Ramey Johnson, R-Lakewood, will seek another two-year
term in House District 23.
Johnson said she hopes to be re-elected in November
in order to continue fighting the state budget battle.
“I continue to work tirelessly for our
district,” she said in a press statement. “I’m
committed to finding a resolution to our state’s budget
crisis. Structurally, changes are needed or the ongoing quandary
will sink us.”
Johnson, a registered nurse, also said that
some tinkering with state amendments will be necessary.
“TABOR, Amendment 23, and Gallagher all
need to be adjusted,” she said. “There is no single
answer. It’s the combination that is killing us, and
all three must be revised.”
Johnson said she also plans to work toward affordable
health care and “protecting the dignity of our older
citizens.”
During her first year at the Capitol, she said
four of the five bills she sponsored became law.
“I learned quickly how to pass or oppose
bills, and those skills are invaluable in addressing issues
key to District 23 and all Coloradans,” she said.
The bills included stiffer enforcement laws
against child pornographers and a streamlined worker’s
compensation appeal process. Johnson, who is a nurse, also
passed three health care initiatives. She helped put diagnoses
on prescription drug labels to help patients and their families
avoid confusion. She also started a pilot program allowing
disabled individuals who are wheelchair-bound and on Medicaid
to choose their personal care attendant. Finally, she co-sponsored
health insurance rate-banding to make health insurance more
affordable for small businesses.
Johnson, a graduate of Jefferson High School
and longtime Lakewood resident, received her nursing degree
from Metropolitan State College. She has a masters in nursing
from the University of Colorado.
